World AIDS Day began in 1988 and is held on 1 December each year to commemorate those who have died and to educate about the struggle to end HIV. This global health day gives people a chance to show their support for people living with HIV.
According to worldaidsday.org, more than 90,000 people are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally an estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.
Despite the great strides made in HIV treatment and awareness, there is till much to be done. This includes educating people on protection, prevention, treatment, and working to overcome the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV. Good Vibrations COO Jackie Strano says, “World AIDS Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about a serious epidemic that has touched so many people. Good Vibrations is proud to increase awareness, compassion, and work to eliminate HIV.”
