SAN FRANCISCO - (May 20, 2007): Join Good Vibrations, the legendary Bay Area company that takes pride in providing educational materials and accurate information on sexuality and toys for grown-ups, in recognizing the many ways we can pleasure ourselves by celebrating the 13th annual National Masturbation Month this May.
Good Vibrations created National Masturbation Month in 1995, after Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was fired for saying that masturbation is "perhaps something that should be taught" as part of young peoples' sexual education. Good Vibes believes that sexual pleasure is a birthright and that masturbation is a powerful source of sexual gratification.
The intention of National Masturbation Month is to raise awareness, and emphasize the importance of masturbation. Of all the kinds of sex people can have, masturbation is the most universal. It helps people learn about their bodies and sexual responses. It's safe, healthy and most of all, it's pleasurable!
"Masturbation is an elemental component of healthy, happy sexuality for so many people," explained Dr. Carol Queen, PhD, author, activist and staff sexologist for Good Vibrations. "The popularity of National Masturbation Month and our overwhelming customer response reinforces the fact that everyone's doing it, but with the exception of Betty Dodson, PhD, we were the first to talk about it. Sometimes called the 'Mother of Masturbation' for her early teaching and activism, Betty was also an important inspiration for National Masturbation Month."
As part of this year's celebration, Dr. Carol Queen and Dr. Robert Lawrence will be hosting a free "Ask the Doctors: Masturbation" event at Good Vibrations' 603 Valencia Street store location on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. They will be discussing the evolution of masturbation and different cultural perceptions of the practice, as well as "how to" techniques and toys.
National Masturbation Month also includes the internationally renowned "Come for a Cause" Masturbate-A-Thon, sponsored by Good Vibrations and presented by the Center for Sex & Culture. For more information on how to participate live or online, visit www.masturbate-a-thon.com.
