While lap dancing in a New York City club, Barbara Carrellas had an ecstatic experience with a client- and thus she began a new chapter in her life as a Tantrika. Carrellas’ story shows that as Tantric practices made their way from India, they have changed and adapted to their new practitioners. Carrellas embodies an approach to Tantra that is conscious, flexible, and joyful. It can be practiced anywhere, even in the midst of busy city living. She discusses energy, chakras, meditation, short and long Tantric exercises, orgasm, masturbation, and couples massage. Unlike most instructional books on Tantra, she also includes chapters on BDSM, solo and group rituals, and even magic. Carrellas writes inclusively and avoids the gender stereotypes of other books in this genre. All orientations. With an introduction by Annie Sprinkle. 2007, 288 pp.
“Anyone interested in Tantra will find something useful, helpful, or just plain fun in this book. Carrellas takes a complex topic and makes it super-easy to understand and figure out.”

I have recently become more interested in Tantra work in the realm of sexual experience. This is a great beginner’s guide to sexual Tantric practice. The opening of this book drew me in with a story about a Tantric lap dance. Yes, a Tantric lap dance where the dancer experiences a full body orgasm. After finishing the prelude I knew I would enjoy the book and Barbara’s gift of writing where she doesn’t take herself too seriously.
I could gush about the different concepts in this book for hours. But I’ll let you pick it up for yourselves. I just want to give some highlights. I really appreciate Barbara’s use of inclusive language regarding all sexualities and gender variations. From the beginning of the book Barbara dispels the myth that Tantra is a heterosexuals-only practice. The illustrations inside this book show different couples without heavy emphasis on stereotypical gender characteristics.

I had a misconception of what Tantric practice and sex were, much less that it was a practice I didn't even need a partner for. Urban Tantra teaches you how to explore your own sexuality with energy, breath, and emotion. Then you can take all that knowledge to the bedroom with a partner to result in a more mind-blowing connection. A must-read for anyone interested in enhancing their sex life, especially with themselves.
