How to Choose a Strap-on Dildo Harness

GoodVibes.com > How To Articles > Harnesses

There are a few things to think about when selecting a strap-on harness.

Material

Leather is a great material for harnesses, as it gets softer and more comfortable with age. Leather can feel good against the skin, and can be cleaned with a leather oils and cleaners or a damp cloth and soap, but should not get wet. If leather is cared for properly, it will provide years of use. However, leather can not be disinfected. Also, it will stretch a bit when the harness is new; you may have to adjust the straps more often while that process is going on.

Nylon and fabric harnesses are affordable and machine-washable (but should not be put in the dryer). They may not be as comfortable as leather, but these materials can be worn in the shower, pool and hot tub. They are also lightweight and easy to travel with.

Vinyl harnesses can either be high-sheen or more subdued and leather-looking. No matter what finish it has, vinyl harnesses are attractive and can be as long-lasting as leather. Vinyl is quite flexible and movable. It is water-resistant and can be cleaned with soap and water.

Harness Styles

A single-strap harness has one strap between the legs like a G-string. This middle strap can provide direct pressure to the wearer's genitals. You’ll have more control, but some people dislike the sensation of the center strap. Plus, the strap will be in the way if you want to be on the receiving end of genital stimulation

Two-strap harness fits like a jock-strap, with leg straps that fit around the buttocks for better control and adjustability. Many people find them more comfortable, but they take a little practice to use. The straps may need to be adjusted if you change positions, but the genitals are more accessible with this style.

A low-riding harness means that the ring is places lower on the pubic bone, making it easier to maneuver and providing pressure on all the right places.

Thigh harnesses wrap around the leg, rather than the hips. They work great if you want to sit still and have your partner straddle your leg. Two women can each wear a thigh harness for simultaneous penetration. Or you can wrap one around a chair or pillow to make your dildo hands-free.

A double-dildo compatible harness allows for the wearer of the harness to have a dildo inserted as well. It is designed with a backing that allows the user to unsnap the back from the front and insert 2 dildos or a double dildo.

Some harnesses have a backing which can act like a pad. Some wearers prefer to have material between themselves and the toy, and some prefer to feel the stimulation of the dildo against their genitals and pubic area, especially when using a vibrating toy. Harnesses with backings are perfect for dildos with balls, as the balls fit in front of the backing (resulting in less pinching and pubic hair-pulling) and are less bulky than if they fit behind the harness.

For added stimulation, you may want to consider a harness that has a pocket that fits a small vibe. This increases stimulation for the harness wearer.

Buckles or Rings

Harnesses with D-rings have straps that slide through metal rings, making them fully adjustable and easy to tighten with one hand. Harnesses with D-rings can be put on and taken off quickly. Try looping the loose end into the harness’s waist band to help secure it, since sometimes D-rings allow a little slippage.

Buckles are aesthetically pleasing and sturdy. A harness with buckles guarantees to hold its size, and once you've found the right hole, it will be "personalized" to fit you.

The D-ring and buckle combo -- some harnesses have buckles around the waist and D-rings on the leg straps. This is a great combination for fast adjustments during sex.

The ring on the harness that the dildo goes through is called the O-ring. Some harnesses have permanent rings and some have rings that can snap in and out for varying-sized toys. Larger dildos may not fit into the permanent O-ring, which generally measures 1 ¾". Be sure to check the diameter of the O-ring of a harness (if it is permanent) and the diameter of your favorite toy to make sure they are compatible. If the harness style allows for interchangeable O-rings, you can buy O-rings to fit your dildo and snap it into your harness.

Sizing

Many harnesses range between 28" to 60" around the hips. Keep in mind that some people like to wear their harnesses on their waist, while some prefer that it sits low on the hips. This can change the measurement you'll want. Figure out how you like to wear your harness before you check the sizing.
