Last year was a tough one for everyone. The porn industry, however, didn't flinch. As usual, it churned out thousands upon thousands of videos. Though we at Good Vibrations didn't have to watch every single one of them, we still sifted though piles of porn to keep our discriminating customers -- and ourselves -- happy.

Actually, I love watching porn for a living. It's a strange vocation, but I always have interesting conversations at parties -- and it's a great icebreaker. I'm constantly amazed that I can be moved by a hot sex scene, when I find my thighs clenched watching riveting chemistry between a couple -- even after all these years I still get turned on doing my job. When these movies shine, they really sparkle. Last year, we had some real gems.

I've put together an editor's choice top 10 list of erotic videos from 2001. My criteria are largely based on the stroke value of hot sex, hot actors, and believability -- if not in the acting, then in the chemistry, so that you can believe the actors really want to be having sex with each other. Also, production values are important -- if the director is trying to tell a story or convey a mood, it needs to work; if a low budget makes a film look less polished, then there must be something interesting in the director's technique. A great actor can make a film great, like Randy Spears in Bad Wives 2, and jaw-dropping authentic orgasms from lovely enthusiastic women can make a video sing -- as in Screaming Orgasms. I tend not to go for films with surgically-enhanced actresses: fake boobs are distracting to me, the scars are freaky, and our customers tend to prefer all-natural women. Films that break porn's formulas score big -- that is, if they work.

So here are my top 10 picks for 2001:

1. Dangerous Games: Our customers can't get enough of director and porn veteran Veronica Hart's films, so it's no surprise that her newest release is at the top of my personal heap. High production values, great acting and excellent scripts are the norm in all of her videos, but in Dangerous Games some of my favorite actors -- Chloe, Tina Tyler, Mickey G, Kyle Stone -- have scorchingly hot sex. I knew I was into something good when the movie's opening scene plunged right into the action with Chloe having orgasm after shuddering orgasm. Later, Tina Tyler in all her squishy splendor tops her husband like only a femme can, making him watch her have sex with two beefy guys. But I was compelled to watch from beginning to end when this character-driven plot careened out of control and into a film noir. They just don't make 'em like this in Hollywood -- but I wish they would.

2. Unreal: Dark dramas topped this year's chart, and Antonio Passolini's visually captivating exploration of one woman's tenuous hold on reality made the grade -- and then some. Staff favorite orgasm addict Chloe plays Monica English, a prim and restrained secretary whose shockingly taboo fantasies suddenly become reality in vivid, steamy detail. The sex just plain sizzles, from her outrageously hot blowjob in the first scene (she can't get enough and he won't give it to her), to the anonymous encounter she has with two handsome and hung men in the final sequence (one of whom is the yummy Mark Davis). Chloe's orgasms between the two guys are unforgettable, as is the stunning cinematography. A real treat from Passolini.

3. Screaming Orgasms: When it comes to great porn, nothing beats cute young women laughing and having fun while experiencing one authentic orgasm after another. Who needs plot? That's exactly what I thought when I watched this great collection of scenes containing energetic pairs of hotties pleasing themselves and each other with toys, fingers, tongues and an unusual sex machine. It's extremely entertaining and arousing fare for folks who want something with high stroke value that's also high in quality. And I just love how the women are everyday, amateurish, like the gals that might be serving my coffee.

4. Bad Wives 2: Director Paul Thomas has long been a favorite with our customers for his complex storylines and his actors' stellar performances, and with Bad Wives 2 he doesn't disappoint. In this sequel to the film that won the most awards in adult history, two wives are in jail for attempting to murder their good-for-nothing husbands, and the devil (played by none other than Randy Spears) takes more than a casual interest in their souls. One thing leads to another, and Spears takes the wives on a sex-drenched tour of their former lives, culminating in a show-stopping sex standoff between Spears and the luscious Raylene. The cast does have some surgical enhancements, but the sexual enthusiasm is high. Though the scenes are largely formulaic, some of them are very hot, such as the bowling alley encounter with real-life husband and wife John Decker and Ava Vincent. But every sex scene is worthy of a rewind -- Paul Thomas has done it again.

5. The Joy of Erotic Massage: This list could only be complete with what had to be the best instructional video of the year. The filming, editing, and lighting are excellent; the content doesn't disappoint, either. Two very in-love (and very attractive) couples explicitly demonstrate how to begin an erotic massage, make it last while teasing their partners to arousal, and then bring it to a delicious orgasmic conclusion, complete with male and female genital massage techniques. It's an indispensable tape, but what I really loved was that the voice-over seemed to be done by Isaac Hayes -- or maybe it's his brother -- and he gives great information while delivering lines like, "get your action machine on." Whew! Too hot!

6. Sugar High Glitter City: This year, the hip, no-nonsense butch/femme team that brought us the best-selling video Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels released this very intense, wall-to-wall lesbian sex fest. In it, tough butches and slutty femmes go up against each other on the streets of Glitter City, where sugar is outlawed and women will do anything to get it. Excellent cinematography and the torrid sex between real-life couples make this one of the best films of the year, not to mention the great music and truly gorgeous cast of curvy femmes and lanky butches. Though the trading of sex for addictive substances theme isn't my cup of tea, it's done with enough wit, verve and humor to make it work. And you'll be amazed by the gushing orgasms -- oh, my.

7. Slide Bi Me: Bisexual films are usually lackluster, to say the least. This year, the genre got a shot in the arm with Good Vibrations' own bi film, boasting a cast of real bisexuals (not gay or straight actors out making a buck), high production values, and some real-life lovers whose connection you can see on film. Directed by an artist with a surreal take on storytelling, there isn't a lot of plot, but plenty of good-natured sexual exploration between young, cute "regular folks." Kudos to this film for handling the genre well, treating bisexuality respectfully, and giving bi viewers more options for quality stroke material.

8. Edge Play: Another winner from Veronica Hart, this time starring Marilyn Chambers. This high-quality film follows Marilyn's libido as it leads her into getting involved with a wealthy couple who run an elite service for discriminating women that want to live out their edgier, most taboo fantasies. Marilyn watches -- but will she try it for herself? I loved the way Hart delivered hot fantasies on a silver platter while maintaining believability with clear consent. Just see if you can make it through the first outrageous, gushing female orgasm scene without having one yourself.

9. Emerald Rain: An astoundingly high budget and on-location shooting made this journey into the rain forest's heart of darkness a pleasing visual spectacle of sex in gorgeous locations. Very dreamily shot, the sex scenes slowly (and lovingly) play themselves out amidst the backgrounds of giant waterfalls, beautiful beaches, and tranquil streams. The plot is as muddy as a riverbank and I have to wonder how they got all that silicone in the rainforest -- but who cares when there's nice chemistry between the couples, the sex is tender enough to be called lovemaking, and there are themes of longing for love lost. For folks who just want languid sex in pretty places, this is some great, high production value couples' fare.
